Chalky residue on your hand means the paint is worn out

Rub a faded exterior wall. If white powder comes off on your hand, the paint has broken down and lost its bond. That is chalking. Painting over it without a wash and prime coat leaves the new paint to peel fast. Cracking that looks like dry mud and paint that flakes to bare wood carry the same message. The surface is done and needs real prep, not just a fresh color.

The south and west walls fade first

Sun does not hit a house evenly. The south and west sides take the most hours of direct light, so they fade, chalk, and crack years before the shady sides. That is why one wall can look tired while the rest looks fine. We prep the worst walls harder. A good power wash before painting pulls off dirt, mildew, and loose chalk so the new coat can grip.

Bare wood and soft trim have to be fixed before paint

Paint is not a repair. If the trim is soft, cracked, or rotted, new paint seals moisture inside and the wood keeps failing under a nice-looking coat. Fascia, window sills, and the bottom edges of siding rot first because water sits there. We check those spots and handle siding repair before we paint so the finish lasts. Homes across Austin face heat and hard rain, and both punish a rushed exterior job.
